GLASS

The oldest glass in Japan is thought to date from the Jomon to Yayoi periods. During the Asuka and Nara periods, it became widely used by the upper classes, but during the Heian period, pottery technology advanced and glass culture went into decline.

Later, during the Muromachi period, glass products became popular again with the introduction of Christianity, and through the Edo and Meiji periods, glass crafts are now produced all over the country, including Otaru glass, Tsugaru glass, Hizen glass, Ryukyu glass, Edo Kiriko, Satsuma Kiriko, and Tenma Kiriko.
